Thousands at Risk of Losing SNAP Benefits

More than 100,000 people in Illinois are at risk of losing SNAP benefits due to a new federal rule finalized this week. The rule applies to Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDs) aged 18 to 49 who receive food assistance. The Food Depository is very concerned that this rule will increase hunger among vulnerable members of our community. Read our full statement. Sophie Milam, the Food Depository's senior director of public policy, spoke to ABC7 about the rule: "I think everyone agrees a good paying job is the best long-term solution to hunger and poverty, but unfortunately, it's not always as simple as the availability of jobs."
