When David Flores retired from the Chicago Fire Department after 20+ years of service, he chose to become a Food Depository volunteer to continue doing what comes naturally to him—serving others.
David volunteers every Tuesday and Thursday morning, where he engages in various roles, including packing boxes and preparing food for delivery.
He has also volunteered at events such as the Chicago Stand Down, which provides food and free resources for veterans in need.
The need is up 26% over last year— reaching pandemic level highs. Please help ensure everyone in Chicago and across Cook County has access to nutritious food.

“As a veteran myself, it hurts me to know there are so many fellow vets in need of help,” he says. “That’s part of what I like about [the Food Depository]. It’s opened my eyes to a lot of things and led me to experiences I never envisioned myself doing.
“I really enjoy spending my time here,” said Flores. “I’ve learned a lot and worked with some great people, all while doing something that benefits others.”
Volunteers play a crucial role in our mission to end hunger. Check out some of our volunteer opportunities and join David and the rest of our volunteers to make a difference for those experiencing food insecurity in Cook County.
