Electricity and Heating (LIHEAP) Energy Assistance

Learn how you can receive energy assistance benefits.

What is Electricity and Heating (LIHEAP) Assistance?

Many financial strains can tighten your family’s budget. No one should worry about how to pay for utilities to keep their families safe. LIHEAP energy assistance, also known as the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, supports families in need by covering the costs of electricity and heating expenses.

What Are the Requirements to Qualify for LIHEAP Energy Assistance?

To qualify for the home energy assistance program known as LIHEAP, you must meet certain income limits. Your total gross household income (before tax deductions) for the past 30 days must be at or below 200% of the poverty level. Social Security benefits are not factored into your gross income.

If your rent includes utilities (heat or electricity) your rent must be more than 30% of your income. If you pay your utilities through your landlord, it does not impact your eligibility to receive energy assistance.

Eligibility for the home energy assistance program is not affected by your immigration status.
The LIHEAP application period runs from October 2, 2023 to August 15, 2024 or until LIHEAP program funding is exhausted.
