Statement on mass shootings and gun violence

Our hearts mourn for the children and educators killed in yesterday’s school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Our hearts mourn for the lives lost in the racially motivated shooting targeting African Americans in Buffalo, New York on May 14.

Our hearts mourn for those killed and wounded in the shooting targeting Taiwanese Americans in Laguna Woods, California on May 15.

Our hearts mourn for all those killed and wounded by mass shootings and senseless violence across our nation and here in Chicago. Earlier this month, gun violence touched the Food Depository family when a former colleague of ours was shot and critically wounded. Nobody should feel unsafe at school, at a grocery store, at a house of worship, or on the sidewalks of their community.

The Food Depository aims to end hunger and its root causes so that all people can thrive. As we work toward supporting healthy families and strong, equitable communities, we lift our voice calling for urgent action to stop the violence. As with ending hunger, stopping gun violence requires a national commitment and resolve from citizens, corporations, institutions, and political leaders.

More must be done. Now is the time to act.
