Improving access to WIC in Illinois

Findings from local level research about program access and implementation barriers from the Greater Chicago Food Depository and the Illinois Department of Human Services

WIC provides nutrition and health supports to low-income women, infants and young children. Despite the strong and lasting benefits of program participation, in calendar year 2021, only 36.3 percent of eligible Illinoisans were enrolled in WIC.

This report summarizes findings from insights research conducted by the Greater Chicago Food Depository and the Illinois Department of Human Services in 2022 to improve our Illinois-specific understanding of WIC participation barriers. These learnings will inform our work to identify Illinois-specific solutions to better connect women, infants, and young children to the nutrition that WIC provides.
