Food Depository's largest annual fundraiser raises $1.1 million for hunger relief in Cook County

Winners of the 38th Annual Chicago Commercial Real Estate Awards announced

More than 800 of Chicago’s top commercial real estate professionals gathered at The Old Post Office on Thursday, May 14, to celebrate the 38th Annual Chicago Commercial Real Estate Awards and support the Greater Chicago Food Depository. The evening raised $1.1 million to help provide food for neighbors across Chicago and Cook County at a time when food insecurity remains alarmingly high.

The annual awards dinner is considered the premier event for commercial real estate professionals in Chicago—and it’s also the Food Depository’s largest fundraiser of the year. Since the partnership began in 1989, the real estate industry has helped raise millions of dollars to support the movement to end hunger.

“The Chicago commercial real estate community has been a faithful partner to the Food Depository over the past 38 years, helping to ensure that our neighbors across Chicago and Cook County have access to nutritious food,” said Kate Maehr, Food Depository Executive Director and CEO. “We are grateful for their shared belief that no one should go hungry in our amazing city.”

The Food Depository continues to respond to an elevated need for food as people cope with rising living costs and new restrictions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, our nation’s frontline defense against hunger. More than 1.4 million individuals, about 28 percent of Cook County’s population, continue to find it hard to put food on the table, underscoring the urgent need for reliable access to nutritious meals in our community. The Food Depository is able to keep up with demand for food thanks to valued partners like the commercial real estate industry.

Mayor Brandon Johnson shared remarks with attendees, commending both the commercial real estate industry and the Food Depository’s impact on the City. The event was chaired by Sheila Sipes of Whitney Architects. Associated Bank returned as presenting sponsor, with Crain’s Chicago Business as media sponsor. The VIP reception was sponsored by Ventas; the cocktail reception by Clayco, LJC, and CRG; and the Lunchbox Challenge was sponsored by Pepper Construction. The ceremony was hosted by Ryan Baker, Sports Director at CBS News Chicago.
