SNAP in crisis: How you can help

For the first time in history, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are delayed because of a federal government shutdown. As a result, 1.9 million people in Illinois – including 900,000 of our neighbors across Chicago and Cook County – are not receiving new benefits to buy groceries in November.

SNAP is our nation’s most effective tool for fighting hunger. When benefits are frozen or reduced, the impact is immediate and widespread. While the Greater Chicago Food Depository and our partner network are here to help, no food bank can fill the gap left when SNAP is disrupted. Still, we will do everything in our power to ensure that food is available for anyone in our community who needs it.

We’re inspired by the generosity of people who want to take action right now. Your support helps us respond quickly and meet the growing need. Here’s how you can make a difference:

Lift your voice

Tell Congress to act. Urge your elected officials to fully fund SNAP and ensure benefits continue during the shutdown. Visit our Advocacy Action Center to send a pre-written letter – it only takes two minutes to make your voice heard.

Make a financial gift

Every dollar matters. Thanks to our strong partnerships and bulk purchasing power, just $1 helps provide 3 nutritious meals for neighbors facing hunger. Make a gift today.

Start a virtual food drive

Traditional food drives are no longer the most effective way to help – but a virtual food drive lets you rally friends, family or coworkers to make a collective impact. Start your virtual food drive.

Donate excess food from your business

If your company has surplus food, you can help reduce waste and feed your community. Commercial food donations support children and families while helping businesses save on storage, disposal and taxes. Contact Lynda Rosenbush at [email protected] to learn more.

Share critical information

Follow the Food Depository on social media for the latest updates and resources for community support. Sharing accurate information helps connect neighbors to food and hope.

Support your local pantry

If you’re able, reach out to your neighborhood pantry and ask what they need most. Many are serving record numbers of families this month. Use our find food tool to find a pantry near you.

Thank you for standing with us in this moment. With your help, we can ensure that everyone in our community has access to the food they need. Together, we are greater.
