Turning Food Waste Into Hope

Here are just a few of the ways in which your support is creating a more sustainable community.

Together we are filling plates, not landfills

92 billion pounds of surplus food are produced in the U.S. every year. That’s more than enough to support the 47 million neighbors facing hunger, including here in Chicago and Cook County. Yet too often this food never reaches the people who need it.

This gap is a major breakdown in our food system, especially as food insecurity remains elevated amid rising costs. Through invested supporters like you, we’re turning surplus food into meals for neighbors and innovating cleaner means of food production.

Leading Food Rescue Efforts Across the City

The Greater Chicago Food Depository has been rescuing food since 1986. Last year, we saved more than 46.5 million pounds of quality food for families in need. 40 percent of the food we distribute is donated from local retailers, farms and food producers.

We also connect our network pantry partners with nearby food retailers, creating strong partnerships that empower local collaboration to address food insecurity, especially in high-need communities.

Testing Sustainable Growing Practices

Food insecurity is a complex issue that requires us all to work together to find creative solutions to end hunger. Our hydroponics pilot is helping us learn more about alternative and urban farming opportunities that can provide our neighbors with sustainable local produce options.

With the support of dedicated volunteers, we’re growing a range of herbs, including chives, sage, dill, parsley, and basil. Our team at Chicago’s Community Kitchens uses these herbs in the production of our prepared meals that feed thousands of neighbors each day.

Turning Food Waste Into Jobs and Clean Energy

The small percentage of product we are unable to safely glean and distribute is sent to Green Era in Auburn Gresham where it is transformed into renewable natural gas and nutrient-rich fertilizer.

With Green Era, we're not just disposing of waste responsibly, we're supporting local jobs, generating clean energy and producing compost that helps grow food in the high-priority communities we serve.
