Equitable Start Grant Program
The COVID-19 pandemic caused food insecurity to rise significantly across Chicago and Cook County.
The most dramatic increases in need were seen in predominately Black and Latino neighborhoods, where job losses compounded already high levels of poverty and food insecurity caused by decades of racial inequity and disinvestment. And though we’ve seen signs for economic recovery, vaccine rollout and federal relief, we anticipate the demand for food assistance will remain high for years to come.
To meet this demand, the Greater Chicago Food Depository is pleased to share a funding opportunity to join our network as a new food pantry partner through the Equitable Start Grant Program. This program is designed to equip Black and Latino led community or faith-based organizations with the resources to operate in one of six target communities:
- Chicago Lawn/Ashburn
- Gage Park/West Elsdon
- Melrose Park/Stone Park
Our ambition is to support the opening of food pantries that are designed by the community, for the community. Prospective partners should seek to become welcoming, dignified, stigma-free spaces, where communities find resiliency as they navigate the pandemic now and throughout the economic aftermath. Additionally, ideal partners will have a track record of providing quality service and with strong relationships within the focused community areas.
