Generous friends of the Food Depository will provide $1,000,000 in matching funds once we raise $1,000,000 in new donations. Help us rise to the challenge and make more meals possible.
About the Million Dollar Challenge
In response to the sustained crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the George and Cindy Rusu Family Foundation has provided an extraordinary Million Dollar Challenge. George and Cindy Rusu will give $1,000,000 to the Food Depository if we raise $1,000,000 by October 31!
Your gift, when combined with those of other caring neighbors, will help us unlock the additional $1,000,000, and provide food – and hope – to those facing hunger. We must raise $1,000,000 by October 31 in order to receive this match! New, increased, and reactivated gifts all help us reach our $1,000,000 goal: see the full details in the FAQ below.
By making a gift to the Food Depository today, your impact could be doubled. Learn more about George and Cindy Rusu’s inspiration for issuing this transformational challenge.
Frequently Asked Questions
A new gift: a donation of any amount from an individual, company, foundation, or organization that has never before made a charitable gift to the Food Depository.
An increased gift: a donation in any amount that increases the donor’s total giving in 2020 above the previous year’s donation. Example: In 2019, a donor gave $25 to the Food Depository. This year, the donor increased their gift to $75. In this case, $50 of the donation (the increased gift amount) would qualify toward meeting the challenge total.
A reactivated gift: any gift received from a donor who has not made a charitable gift since December 2018 or earlier.

While the Food Depository’s response to the pandemic has been strong, we know that the true impact of COVID-19 will last for months and years to come. Illinois’ most recently released unemployment rate is 15%. Our network of food pantries and programs have seen an increase in need of up to 120% (compared to January 2020).
Your generous gift, and the $1,000,000 it could unlock, will help us ensure that every resident of Cook County has access to the food they need to thrive.
