The Power of Your Giving:
He Knows Firsthand
Hunger is a painful fact for some school children in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. Many rely on free or reduced-price school meals to get through the day. So when school is suddenly out, those meals are gone.
But there is a grateful high schooler named Jacob who can tell you what a difference you’ve made for children like him.
Thanks in part to your support for the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the Barreto Union League Boys & Girls Club was able to step in and provide meals to area children when the schools couldn’t.
Ever since he was 6 years old, Jacob has been a part of the Club’s after-school program. Barreto has always provided children with much-needed afternoon nutrition.
Jacob has experienced the positive impact of consistent meals: “It helps you work better, move better, operate better,” he says. “It keeps you more awake and focused.”
In partnership with the Food Depository, Barreto and many other youth program sites closed the gap—not just by offering food but also becoming safe learning spaces for children whose parents could not be home in the afternoons.
Thanks to generous friends like you, we provided more than 700,000 meals to children across 181 partner sites in Chicago and Cook County during this past fiscal year.
You can help by giving a gift today that will go three times as far, thanks to a $100,000 matching challenge from our friends at the Malott Family Foundation. Thank you for helping our neighbors—especially children—facing hunger!
