VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: “Keep on pushing!”
“Keep on pushing!”
Volunteers are the foundation for everything the Food Depository does! They’re especially essential across our network of partners, helping to provide food and support directly to our neighbors.
Meet one of our dedicated volunteers: Bernice Kenner. . . .
“Put a smile on your face and keep on pushing!”
That’s how Bernice frames her approach to life.
Even while undergoing chemotherapy, this 62-year-old mother and grandmother volunteers every Monday at the Coppin Community Center food pantry, a longtime Food Depository partner on the South Side.
Bernice’s first cancer diagnosis came nearly 20 years ago. She’d been in remission until the cancer reappeared last summer.
The food pantry where she volunteers operates through the Coppin Memorial A.M.E. Church in Washington Park, providing food to several dozen households every week.
With your support, the Food Depository provided a grant to help the pantry get back to its pre-pandemic service levels, with additional equipment and a redesign for maximum efficiency.
For Bernice, volunteering lets her spend time with her community—volunteers and guests alike—and feeds her love for helping those in need. She strongly believes that no one in Chicago or Cook County should ever go hungry.
Thank you to all our volunteers!
More than 11,200 volunteers dedicated 80,000 hours of service in fiscal 2021 to make sure Chicago-area families had access to nutritious food.
And at our partner food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters, more than 4,500 volunteers work on the front lines every day.
We gratefully rely on volunteers to pack boxes in our warehouse and distribute food to our neighbors out in the community. Volunteer drivers deliver food and lead Lunch Bus distributions for children during the summer.
Even as the pandemic persisted, people of all ages and backgrounds continued to step up. Thanks to strict health and safety protocols, volunteers have been able to continue serving at the Food Depository most days of the week.
Would you like to join us as a volunteer? Groups and individuals are welcome at our warehouse! Or, you can also serve at a community site or at special events. Volunteering is rewarding, fun and so important.
