As the holiday season approaches, our calendars begin to fill up, our to-do lists seem to get longer, and the planning and preparation for celebrations becomes more hectic. That’s why we thought now would be the ideal time to remind our supporters and community members about Giving Tuesday before all the hustle and bustle begins.
What is Giving Tuesday?
Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 with the mission of being a day that encourages people to do good. It is held on the first Tuesday following Thanksgiving in the US and is described as a "global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world".
Giving Tuesday is a global event with more than 95 countries around the world participating in 2023. Participation is free and any nonprofit, community organization, or volunteer group is eligible to take part. Giving Tuesday this year falls on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.
Why Do Charities Participate in Giving Tuesday?
As Giving Tuesday has grown, it has become an important fundraising event that attracts thousands of donors, increasing a charity's visibility to a wide audience. Participating charities report a boost in year-end giving with many of them receiving more donations than on any other ordinary day throughout the year. Because Giving Tuesday is so widely known, it has become a powerful day for many charities’ fundraising efforts.
Why Are Donations Made on Giving Tuesday Particularly Important?
Many charities rely on a year-end drive to get them over their fundraising finish lines. The Giving Tuesday movement expands exposure for these charities, giving them the opportunity to reach their goals. Additionally, Giving Tuesday promotes generosity especially among people with common connections whether they be geographic, cultural, through identity, or through belief and support of a cause.
