Internships and AmeriCorps at the Food Depository
About our internship program
The purpose of the internship program at the Greater Chicago Food Depository is to involve students in various aspects of our mission; to educate and provide them with hands-on, realistic experience in a leading nonprofit organization; and to cultivate an appreciation of the needs of the community we serve to become better informed advocates surrounding the issue of food insecurity.
Internships are open to undergraduate and graduate-level college students of all majors, as well as individuals who are seeking experience in a career relating to nonprofit or social work. Ideal candidates will be seeking degrees, or hold degrees in, public policy, social services administration, public health, communications or a related field. Applicants to the program must meet all necessary requirements to be considered eligible.
Students who are eligible for academic credit and/or special funding programs through their college/university are encouraged to apply. A written evaluation of a completed internship is given to the intern upon successful completion.

About our AmeriCorps program
AmeriCorps provides opportunities for Americans to make an intensive commitment to service through a network of local, state, and national service programs. Each year AmeriCorps engages more than 75,000 Americans in service. Since the program’s founding in 1994, almost 1 million AmeriCorps members have contributed more than 1.2 billion hours in service.
At the Greater Chicago Food Depository, 67 AmeriCorps members have served since 2009. They have assisted SNAP outreach efforts, coordinated food pantry operations, and supported programs that aim to alleviate hunger among older adults, children, and veterans.
AmeriCorps members receive a modest living allowance during their service term, and earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of the program. Fulltime members are eligible for healthcare benefits, childcare assistance, and student loan forbearance. For more information about AmeriCorps, visit nationalservice.gov.
