The Greater Chicago Food Depository is partnering with 1,000 Days and other organizations to host 1,000 Days to Change the Future: Making Malnutrition History on Monday, May 21, at the Chicago History Museum, 1601 North Clark Street, Chicago, Illinois. The half-day summit will bring together global leaders in business, academics and nonprofit communities to discuss strategies to end child malnutrition in the U.S. and throughout the world. Every year, 3.5 million children die from malnutrition worldwide while millions more suffer the disturbing effects of hunger and poor nutrition. In Cook County, nearly 1 in 4 children, 23.5 percent, are food insecure. Poor nutrition during the first 1,000 days between a woman’s pregnancy and her child’s 2nd birthday can lead to lower IQ, chronic diseases and poverty. The 1,000 Days Partnership was launched in 2010 by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and other global leaders to address the critical role child nutrition plays in building healthy and prosperous communities. The Summit will also be hosted by Concern Worldwide, Feeding America, Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago, the World Food Programme, the City of Chicago and World Business Chicago. The event is invite-only. For more information about the 1,000 Days Partnership and the importance of the 1,000 day window, visit www.thousanddays.org. |
